Trauma is often thought of as a tragic or horrific event or series of events like combat, domestic violence, or sexual assault. While these are among the worst events that can happen to a person, trauma refers to the emotional wounds and scarring that naturally occur as a result of survival.

Trauma has the capacity to change how we view ourselves, other people, and the world in general.
For many, the impact of traumatic wounds shows up in a variety of ways:

-
In our thoughts. We re-experience the events regularly, have nightmares, and use our energy trying to avoid thinking about it.
-
In our emotions. We experience panic, a sense of impending danger, low self-worth, or even self-hatred, agitation, or intense anger.
-
In our relationships. We struggle with setting boundaries, people-pleasing behaviors, and opening up or trusting others.
-
In our bodies. We struggle feeling safe enough to fall asleep, sitting still, releasing muscle tension, or managing the overwhelming sensations that come at the most inopportune times.

Trauma is not something we are meant to unpack and heal from all on our own. Not one of us is equipped to face the aftermath of trauma alone, but the support of close friends, family members, and/or a trusted therapist can help us in the healing process.

The best news is that healing is possible. At Clarity Counseling, our trained therapists can help acknowledge these wounds in a therapeutic environment that is non-judgmental, compassionate, and accepting of all your pain. Together, we can explore ways to leave your trauma in the past without allowing it to invade the present or dictate the future. Our therapists approach treatment from a trauma-informed lens and utilize a variety of effective, evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
